Questions

Things people ask me

If yours isn't here, ask it directly — I'd rather answer a question than have it stop you.

What's your specialty?

Honestly, I'm a generalist. I've been doing this long enough to have a lot of different tools for a lot of different situations. If you made me pick where I do my strongest work: trauma, particularly with men, and adults coming to terms with an autism or ADHD diagnosis later in life.

In person or virtual?

Both. In person here in Durango, or by video anywhere in Colorado. Plenty of people do a mix depending on the week.

Do you take insurance?

Not right now — private pay only. A sliding scale is available and I set it case by case, so it's worth asking. More detail on the rates page.

What happens in the first session?

Mostly we get to know each other. I want to know who you are, and I want you to get a read on who I am as a provider. Bring whatever's actually on your mind. There's nothing to prepare.

How long does this take?

It depends what you're bringing. Some people come for a few months to work one specific thing through. Others stay longer because the work keeps opening up. We'll talk about it honestly as we go.

Who do you work with?

Adults, roughly 18 to 65, one to one. I have experience working with children but I prefer adults, and I'm not currently taking couples, family or group work.

Where are you licensed?

Colorado only. That means in-person here in Durango, or video anywhere in the state — but I can't see you if you're sitting in another state at the time of the session.

Do I need a diagnosis to come in?

No. You don't need a diagnosis, a tidy explanation, or a reason that sounds serious enough to justify the appointment. “Something isn't right and I'm tired of it” is a fine place to start.

I've never done therapy before and don't know what to say.

That's genuinely common and it's not a problem. You don't have to be good at therapy to start therapy. I'll do more of the driving early on until you find your footing.

What if you're not the right fit for me?

Then I'll say so, and I'd rather say it early than let you spend months finding out. If what you need sits outside what I do, I'll point you somewhere more useful.

Is what I tell you confidential?

Yes, with the legal limits every therapist in Colorado works under — the main ones being risk of serious harm to yourself or someone else, and suspected abuse of a child or an at-risk adult. I'll go through this with you properly at the intake. Note that the contact form on this website is not a confidential channel.

Still have a question?

Ask it. There's no cost to a question and I'd rather you knew.
